General Sectionm



General Section is an integral part of the Office of the District Magistrate. All official works including correspond-ences, enquiry for financial assistance, forwarding of the same to the concerned Offices, Assembly and Parliamentary Questions, public grievance, matters related to the Army, Navy and Air force and all works of miscellaneous nature are dealt with by this section.

The main functions of the section may be summarized as follows:

General Correspondence: The correspondences received from different offices are received and processed for instruction from the higher authorities and dispatched to the respective offices or sections for necessary action. This office performs the activities defined by the Youth Services Department and Sports Department, Government of West Bengal. The targets of this office are – (i) To spread the Science Sports and cultural activities among the students and youths, (ii) To bring out the talents from the students and youths by organizing grassroots level events and nurture the talents, (iii) To promote the locally popular sports and cultural activities, (iv) To facilitate the youths in generation of income by providing skill development training ,(v) To maintain the existing infrastructures of the Youth and Sports Department and monitor in creation of new infrastructures.

Verification Rolls : The Verification Rolls of newly appointed employees of Central Government , Banks, Defense Service, etc., are received from the Appointing Authorities, processed and forwarded to DIB, Alipurduar and IB, Kolkata for police enquiry, verification and submission of report. The complete verification rolls received from IB, Kolkata are sent back to the respective authorities through the General Section.

Governor\ís Discretionary Grant: A lump amount of money is sanctioned in every year as grant out of the Governor's Discretionary Grants in favour of non-official, non-political and non-religious organizations working for the welfare of the people in different aspects. The grants are sanctioned to the organizations with which the Governor is connected honorably and the organizations apply through the District Magistrate and the Director of Social Welfare in prescribed format.( Format I). The Governorís Welfare Fund.: Enquiry with respect to financial assistance to undergo major surgery etc. out of Governor of West Bengal's Wel-fare Fund is done and forwarded to the Honíble Governorís Office for consideration. Click here for details

Financial assistance through the Chief Ministerís Relief Fund : Applications for the Chief Ministerís Relief Fund for Medical Assistance, Educational Assistance, and for loss of property due to unforeseen incidents, natural calamities, road or fire accidents etc. are compiled and forwarded to the Honíble Chief Ministerís Office for consideration. Communications regarding Political Matters : Applications received from different political organizations are received processed and sent to concerned Offices or higher authorities for necessary intervention from their end.

Assembly and Parliamentary Questions: Replies to the questions raised in the Legislative Assembly and in the Parliament are sought for from the con-cerned departments and are compiled and submitted to the government by the section.

Matters relating to Army, Navy, Air force, etc. : Information regarding the recruitment to the Army, Navy, Air force, etc. are sent to various offices for wide publicity. Important correspondences received from these offices are also dealt with by the section.

Public Grievance: The requests, complaints and suggestions of the public in the form of individual or mass grievance is received and sent to the concerned offices to mitigate the problems or incorporate the suggestions wherever possible.

Receipt and Dispatch of Dak: The Receipt and Dispatch of Dak is a very important function of this section as all the letters addressed to the Dis-trict Magistrate are received by this section and all the letters of the different sections of the Collectorate are dis-patched by this section through ordinary or speed post.

RTI Act 2005: It is an act to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority andto set up a practical regime for giving citizens access to information that is under the control of public authorities.
